This 5-step counteroffer structure has helped my clients negotiate $5K to $50K more salary:

1. Confirm your interest and gratitude for the role.
2. Reframe their pain points as goals to achieve.
3. Reiterate your experience fixing pain points.
4. Make the ask (salary, bonus, vacation, etc).
5. Close them (top 10% do this).

Pro tip:
Avoid saying: "Would 'you' be able to offer $X?"
Instead, try: "Would [Google] be able to offer $X?"

This DEPERSONALIZES the negotiation by removing personal pressure and frames the company as the 3rd party decision-maker, not the individual.

NOTE: This is an EXAMPLE structure for you to adapt and make your own.

As always, conduct research and take into consideration your own personal and financial circumstances.

The market sets the rate.

But, hopefully this will help guide some of you to better offers.

(Also, the $50,000 client was an outlier – do your research)

Good luck!
Sam
